So, since I learned all about chickens I thought I would tell you about the chickens we have. We have a few different breeds.
We had two pairs of bantam/ old english chickens that we let roam the farm. About three weeks ago one of the hens disappeared--probably eaten by a hawk, skunk, dog, or something. Anyway I do not have pictures but will try to take and post some soon.
Our chickens in the coop are two different breeds. We have a rooster and four hens that are Dominques. These are a dual purpose breed which means that they are good at laying eggs and good for meat production too. http://www.backyardchickens.com This is a good website to learns about different breeds.
Then we have seven Golden Comet hens. These are a sex link hybrid--which means that they are a mix of different chickens and when they are born the male chicks and female chicks have different coloring so it is easier to tell them apart. These are especially bred to lay eggs, however when we hatch their eggs we will not get a Golden Comet--we will have to see what we get. We are currently incubating 24 eggs about half are from the Dominques and half are from the Golden Comets so in a bout three weeks we will see what happens.
Anyway--we get about 8-10 eggs a day and usually about 4-5 of them are large double yolkers. Whenever Isaac--my four year old--brings one of the bigs ones in he usually wants to eat it for his breakfast or lunch whatever time of day it is. Good thing he is young enough not to have to worry about cholesterol.
Anyway--it has been fun to raise the chickens--we'll see if I still enjoy it when it comes time to retire a few of the layers to the freezer.:O
